Subject: Coordinate Breast Cancer Research

Thank you for your e-mail to Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach, Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), regarding priorities for and coordination of breast cancer research. You raise some very important issues. We hope the following information addresses your concerns.

In 1997, NCI assembled a Breast Cancer Progress Review Group (PRG) to help define a national research agenda for breast cancer. This multidisciplinary group of scientists, clinicians, and advocates issued a report in 1998 recommending breast cancer research goals for the next 10 years. This document, called “Charting the Course: Priorities for Breast Cancer Research,” is available at http://prg.nci.nih.gov/breast/finalreport.html on NCI’s Web site and from our Publications Ordering Service (option 2 at 1–800–4–CANCER).

Early this year, an internal NCI Breast Cancer Working Group was convened to assess the progress made since the release of the PRG report. The Working Group recently released “The NCI Breast Cancer Progress Report,” which documents trends in our breast cancer research portfolio and the progress that has been made in meeting the priorities identified by the PRG. This report will help guide the Institute as it moves forward in breast cancer research. The report is available at http://prg.nci.nih.gov/breast/progress.html on our Web site. You may order a printed copy of the report's Executive Summary by calling 1–800–4–CANCER or by visiting the NCI’s Publications Locator Web site at http://www.cancer.gov/publications on the Internet.

Thank you for writing to share your views and concerns.
