Sponsorship Levels and Benefits
We are overjoyed to have the brilliant, honest, and funny New York Times best-selling author, Peggy Orenstein join us this year. She will share excerpts from her 2013 More Magazine piece of renewal of spirit through her trip to Finland and coming terms with the body that betrayed her. She is the author of the New York Times best-sellers Cinderella Ate My Daughter and Waiting for Daisy as well as Flux and the classic Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem and the Confidence Gap. A Contributing Writer for The New York Times Magazine, she wrote last year’s cover story, “Our Feel-Good War Against Breast Cancer.” She is currently in treatment for a local recurrence of breast cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1997.
Joining Peggy Orenstein on the stage is Sarah Bush Dance Project, a cutting-edge contemporary dance troupe, performing modern dance with hip hop choreography. The troupe uses a wide range of music–from folk to electronic–along with visual images to illustrate and parallel the variety and differences in human experiences and emotion.
And prepare to laugh – Irene Tu, stand-up comic, writer, and performer from Chicago, joins the line-up of bold performers. Some have described her as “sarcastic,” but she just tells it like it is. Irene has performed in SF Sketchfest, Limestone Comedy Festival, She-Devil Comedy Festival, Chicago Women’s Funny Festival, and was a finalist in Rooftop Comedy’s National College Comedy Competition.
Completing our unique line-up are The Beauty Operators! They are a traditional bluegrass group known for their high-energy live performances and irreverent misappropriation of celebrated pop songs into original bluegrass masterpieces. This six-piece string-band ensemble features guitar, bass, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, banjo and soaring three-part harmonies set against a toe-tapping rhythm. The group recently performed to a packed house at The Chapel for The Britgrass Invasion: An All-Bluegrass Tribute to The Beatles.
We’re excited to have award-winning author, comedian, and longtime BCAction member, Tania Katan emceeing the event! Tania brings her creative and humorous approach to tough topics like surviving cancer and gay rights. Last year she joined the event and read from her memoir My One Night Stand with Cancer, and we have no doubt she’ll have us “belly-laughing” throughout the evening.
